Central Florida green group to measure impact of using eco-friendly building techniques

Robyn Dowsey is going back to school, but she won’t be hitting the books.

Instead, a trade group she heads up, the Central Florida chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) for Schools committee, will turn a Central Florida school renovation project into a “green” test laboratory.

We welcome you to our third annual LEEDers Cup Golf tournament. This event has quickly become the “can’t miss” event organized by your USGBC Central Florida Chapter. This year’s event will take place on Monday, April 19 and our event home will once again be the renowned Legacy Club at Alaqua Lakes – the Tom Fazio designed championship course that has the distinction of being the first course in Central Florida to be recognized as an Audubon International Certified Sanctuary.

Sylvia Earle Spoke at GreenBuild 2009

Marine biologist Sylvia Earle has been an Explorer-In-Residence at the National Geographic Society since 1998. Named Time magazine’s first “hero for the planet” in 1998.

Sylvia spoke of her journeys under the sea and showed us in vived photographs of a beautiful and very much still uncharted land. Don’t miss this inspirational look at the oceans around the world.

USGBC CF Participates with local Girl Scout Troop Canstruction Build and Contest

Canstruction Orlando and the Girl Scouts. USGBC CF Director of Social Equity, Deborah Green helped a local Girl Scout troop with signage graphic design and the troop built a structure to compete with local design firms. Come out to the Fashion Square Mall this week only( October 19th – 25th) to see the mini-city built of cans. This event promotes awareness about the hungry and who you can help this holiday season and beyond.

Senator Lee Constantine attends USGBC-CF Annual LEEDership Dinner

Senator Lee Constantine will attend the U.S. Green Building Council, Central Florida Chapter
Annual LEEDership Dinner tonight at the Church Street Ballroom from 5:00 – 9:00 PM. The chapter will present LEEDership Awards honoring every component of LEED accomplishments, from construction to schools, honoring each for their contributions to the community.

EGB Event a Great Success

Thursday, September 24th , Seminole Community College Emerging Green Builders (SCC-EBG) held a Panel Discussion: Local LEED AP Professionals talk about the LEED Process. Winter Haven Has Its First LEED-Registered Home in the Lake Otis Area

Winter Haven’s first LEED-registered home is well underway on the shores of Little Lake Otis and both the contractor and architect say the job represents a culmination of their prior experiences – and a glimpse of what their work is quickly becoming.

It’s not difficult to determine the importance of sustainable design and construction in our industry if you attend one of these meetings. All you have to do is look around the room and you will see “standing room only” visitors, all listening intently to the speaker. The meetings serve as an open forum, where the speakers and guests alike challenge one another and learn from each other’s expertise.

These lunchtime training sessions were initiated by Wharton-Smith’s Sustainable Design and Construction Department Manager – Robyn Dowsey, LEED AP. “Group thinking, teaching and researching plays such an important in our community. We are strengthening ourselves and raising the bar on what we can offer our clients and what we can bring to our communities,” said Mrs. Dowsey.
